How Theranostics Works

Theranostics combines advanced diagnostic imaging and targeted therapy to support more personalised approaches to healthcare.

A More Personalised Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment

While every patient journey is unique, theranostics generally follows a pathway that helps clinicians identify disease, assess suitability for treatment and monitor response over time.

By connecting diagnostics and therapy through a shared biological target, theranostics can provide valuable information that supports clinical decision-making and helps guide patient care.

Empowering Patients Through Knowledge

The Patient Journey

1. Diagnosis

The journey begins with a diagnosis and an assessment of the patient's condition.
This may involve a combination of clinical examinations, pathology results, imaging studies and discussions with healthcare professionals. The goal is to understand the type, location and extent of disease before considering potential treatment options.

2. Imaging & Assessment

Once a diagnosis has been established, specialised imaging may be used to identify specific biological targets associated with the disease.
These imaging procedures help clinicians visualise disease activity and determine whether a patient may be suitable for a theranostic approach.
The information gathered during this stage can play an important role in treatment planning and patient selection.

3. Treatment Planning

Healthcare professionals use diagnostic findings, clinical evidence and individual patient factors to develop a treatment strategy.
This process considers a range of factors including:

  • Disease characteristics

  • Previous treatments

  • Overall health status

  • Potential risks and benefits

  • Patient preferences and goals

The aim is to create a treatment plan tailored to the individual patient.

4. Targeted Therapy

For selected patients, targeted therapy may be recommended.
Theranostic therapies are designed to interact with specific biological targets identified during the diagnostic process. This allows treatment to be directed towards disease sites while helping to minimise exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.
Depending on the treatment approach, therapy may be delivered in an outpatient setting or through a short hospital visit.

5. Monitoring & Follow-Up

Theranostics does not end when treatment is completed.
Follow-up appointments, imaging and clinical assessments help healthcare teams evaluate treatment response and monitor disease over time.
This ongoing monitoring can provide valuable insights that help guide future care decisions and support long-term patient management.

Why This Matters

Traditional healthcare approaches often separate diagnostics and treatment into distinct processes. Theranostics brings these elements together by using information gathered during diagnosis to help guide therapy and monitor outcomes.

This connected approach supports more personalised decision-making and contributes to the broader movement towards precision medicine.

Every Patient Is Different

Not every patient will be suitable for theranostics, and treatment decisions should always be made in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals.

As research continues and new applications emerge, theranostics is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping clinicians deliver more personalised and informed patient care.
